From the Desk
The election is over. Thanks to all the organizations we partnered with that worked to register voters, get out the vote, and work the polls, as well as to all our members and volunteers who worked on all aspects of the election process. I know I will miss many people, but I want to shout out to Barbara Larkin, Denita Jones, Kelly Martin, Elaine Campbell, Diane Tasian, Madge Cruse, Elizabeth Walley, Kebran Alexander, Joan Ridley, Shannon FitzGerald, Jessica Rivera-Lucas, Olivia Justice Countryman, Norma Arratia, Gwenda Lowe, Edna Arratia, Nivasha Howery, A.J. Cole, Jen Markley, and Bill Betzen for taking leadership roles during this cycle. I want to give a big shout-out to Daryl Meador for handling phone calls and emails.
We have no time to roll down our sleeves and sit back. Incoming members of the new Legislature are already filing bills for the session beginning in January. We will stay informed and educated about those issues that arise where we have a position so we can advocate for or against bills. We will work hard to keep you informed during the legislative process so you can also “Take Action.”
Our Nominating Committee will begin working to find candidates for the Board of Directors for our next fiscal year. Let us know if you or someone you know would like to serve on the Board.
We are also looking forward to exciting local elections in May. As always, LWV Dallas will provide informative Voter Guides so voters’ decisions are based on factual responses from the candidates. Hopefully, candidates will participate in candidate forums we provide to the public with our non-partisan partners.
We are planning our wonderful annual luncheon for February 21, 2025, to honor our awardees for the Making Democracy Work and the Eleanor Sutherland Volunteer Awards. Invitations will be emailed in late December. We are looking for rare and exciting items for our Silent Auction, so start to look in the attic and other places for unique donations for the event.
Enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving.
In League,
Sandy Thornton |
