From the Desk:
The local elections are over. As of this writing, we will have had another miserable turnout in exercising our right to vote. Our Right to Vote—yes, that right allows us to elect those we want to represent us, our values, and our wishes for our community. However, having the right to vote and exercising it are obviously different.
I’m not sure what that says about us. Do we not care enough about our community to bother? Don’t we have time to attend a candidate forum in person or virtually? Is it too hard to read the Voters Guide or VOTE411.org to learn about the candidates, or read the Dallas Morning News in print or online? Do so many of us believe our vote doesn’t count or our community voices won’t be heard?
Local elections are essential. They may be more significant to us than state or national elections. Do we not know that local elections are about streets, parks, and trash pickup? We sure gripe about them enough.
If you read this newsletter, you already care enough to educate yourself about the elections. We must now encourage others to exercise their Right to Vote. Take it upon yourself to find one or more people to take to the polls at the next election. Talk to them about issues or candidates or direct them to the Voters Guide or VOTE411.org. Please help us reach out to especially low-turnout precincts.
Talking to others about issues or candidates in this political climate is often tricky. Remember to speak truthfully and with civility. Potholes and clean parks should not be too controversial. Hopefully, then, we can move on to talking about water conservation, clean air, affordable housing, and traffic. Our local governments touch every one of these things.
To continue this discussion and hear about other LWV Dallas activities, attend our Annual Meeting on May 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Go here to register and learn more.
