President’s Desk - When Candidates Show Us Who They Are

Campaign season gives us plenty of carefully worded policy positions, polished mailers, and practiced talking points. All of those matter when candidates are trying to connect with voters.  But how candidates show up when the script falls away is just as important. 

I encourage you to pay attention to how candidates make decisions. Do they gather facts before reaching a conclusion, or make assumptions and work backward? When they get something wrong, do they correct it or double down? How do they respond when challenged? How do they talk about the very people they hope to represent?

Elected officials make decisions about our classrooms, our commutes, our utility bills, the safety of our food and water, and countless other things that shape our everyday lives. They will constantly face tough questions they may never have contemplated. But how they listen, respond, and treat people along the way tells us something about how they may approach those decisions. 

Public office is a public trust. Whoever wins an election represents an entire community. Not just the people who voted for them. The League never supports or opposes a candidate or political party. We will never tell you what conclusion to reach. We simply ask you to look beyond campaign promises, do your research, and pay attention to what candidates show us.

October is just around the corner, bringing National Voter Education Month and National Voter Education Week, October 5 - 9.

Now is a great time to check your registration and make sure your information is up to date. You don’t want to encounter an unexpected issue when it’s time to vote, and it’s best to resolve any problems before the October 5 voter registration deadline. Even if you haven’t moved, it’s worth taking a minute to check.

Use it to check your voter registration and find other helpful resources. Share it with your family, friends, neighbors, and community by downloading it in English or Spanish.

Want to get involved with the League? Election season is one of our busiest times of the year and there are plenty of opportunities to register and educate voters or distribute the Voters Guide. Whether you have an hour or want to take on a bigger role, visit our volunteer opportunities to find out how you can get involved. 

Coming Soon: Your Dallas County Voters Guide and VOTE411

The ballot is set and the League of Women Voters of Dallas is getting your Voters Guide ready. For decades, Dallas voters have turned to the League for nonpartisan election information. Our volunteers work hard to check races, research ballot propositions, and invite candidates on the ballot with opponents to respond to our questionnaire in their own words, without edits from the League. Beginning October 8, we’ll distribute our printed Voters Guide to libraries, churches, businesses, and schools throughout the community. VOTE411, our online Voters Guide, will go live on October 5. When you visit vote411.org, enter your address for a personalized look at the races and ballot issues on your ballot. You’ll be able to read our research on ballot propositions and unedited candidate responses side by side, just like in the printed guide.

The U.S. Senate is back in session, and we expect them to try to pass the SAVE Act. The SAVE Act has already passed in the House.

Why do we oppose the SAVE Act?

The SAVE Act would require new and unnecessary barriers to register and vote in every state, like requiring citizenship documents or an ID from a strict list. There is no evidence to support that these new laws are necessary. 

Instead, there’s evidence that the SAVE Act could create major hurdles to registering and accessing the ballot. Election officials all across the country and in Dallas are working diligently to prepare for the midterm election, and the last thing they need is a major change to voting rules with less than 45 days until the midterm election.

This renewed attempt to pass the SAVE Act is part of a long list of tactics that seek to make it more difficult for voters, especially color and naturalized citizens, to vote. Americans do not need MORE obstacles to vote. The League will not stand idly by, and we need your help to stop these unnecessary requirements.

Hello, my name is [NAME], and I’m a constituent from Dallas, Texas.

I’m calling about the SAVE Act and to share my concerns about its proposed voting requirements. 

As I understand it, the legislation would place new requirements for voter registration and voters when casting a ballot. My concern is that adding the requirements in the SAVE Act will create new administrative hurdles for voters that aren’t necessary.  I also have concerns about changing federal voting requirements close to an election and the potential burden on election administrators who already work very hard. 

I respectfully ask Senator [NAME] to oppose the Save Act. Could you please record my position and let me know how the Senator intends to vote on the SAVE Act?
